Why exactly is Britain's police force unarmed?

I'm assuming the criminals could just basically take over if they wanted to...?

Well, at least until armed special forces arrive.

i just spent 3 weeks with 2 brits...and this was discussed. they carry weapons...just not guns. the reason they dont, is because its not really necessary. they do have a special forces team (similar to swat) that is armed.

Guns are harder to come by over there - they basically don't have the same "right to bear arms" that we have over here, so the majority of crimes are not done wtih firearms

Doesn't mean there are some on the streets, but there are special squads (like bone mentioned) that carry them and are trained to swat standards.

I'm not too much up on foreign crime prevention, but the British SAS have some great action figures and people get excited about em.
